Vintage Designer Profile: Eisenberg

Eisenberg jewelry was the staple of stylish women’s wardrobes in the early 1900’s and especially in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. Ironically, dressing women with Eisenberg apparel is where the jewelry line emerged.

In 1914, Jonas established his namesake Eisenberg Clothing Company. He found that the clothing was better received and sold with the addition of decorative jewelry on the garments. These rhinestone accruements began to outshine the clothing as women routinely stole the dress clips without purchasing the clothing. Eisenberg answered demand with the launch of a jewelry collection derived from their dress clips. In 1958, they exited the apparel business all together.

The collection of Swarovski crystals and colored stones, as well as superior craftsmanship and attention to detail catapulted the jewelry line’s popularity. Women coveted the Eisenberg & Sons’ dazzle, sparkle and shine found in necklaces, bracelets, earrings and pins (brooches).

Eisenberg jewelry design is considered abstract art by some and beautiful jewelry by nearly all. Some pieces featured characters from the royal court such as kings and queens; the fantasy world with mermaids and on the stage in the form of ballerinas. As most designers, inspiration from nature found its way in the design of jewelry with animal subjects such as horses, zebras, birds and butterflies. One distinctive element of Eisenberg history is the mini-stories found in its brooches. For instance, there is one that depicts “Puss in Boots” and a clip called “Piggy Goes to Market” from 1941 that was created for the Eaves Costume Company.

You will readily identify a true Eisenberg piece of jewelry through one of the numerous stamps found in the company’s history. Jewelry was signed with Eisenberg & Sons, Eisenberg Original (from 1935 to 1945), Eisenberg (1945 – 1950) and Eisenberg Ice (1945 – 1950).

As with personal style, Eisenberg jewelry continues to be a timeless statement for today’s fashionable women.
